Joint Initiative Targets Anaemia Control in Five Aspirational Districts

The Ministry of Ayush (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy) and the Ministry of Women and Child Development signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi, to address the critical issue of anaemia in adolescent girls. This joint public health initiative is named “Anaemia Control among adolescent girls using Ayurveda interventions in the five districts under Mission Utkarsh.”

Focus on Five Aspirational Districts:

The MoU was signed in the presence of Union Minister of Ayush, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, and Union Minister of Women and Child Development, Smt. Smriti Irani. In the first phase, the program will focus on improving the anaemic status of adolescent girls (aged 14-18) in five aspirational districts across five states:

  • Assam – Dhubri
  • Chhattisgarh – Bastar
  • Jharkhand – Paschimi Singhbhum
  • Maharashtra – Gadchiroli
  • Rajasthan – Dhaulpur

Reaching 95,000 Girls:

This project aims to improve the nutritional status of approximately 95,000 adolescent girls in these high-burden anaemia districts, where the average prevalence is around 69.5%. The initiative will cover roughly 10,000 Anganwadi Centres in these five districts.

Collaboration for a Healthy Future:

Speaking at the event, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal emphasized the collaborative effort between the ministries to achieve an “Anaemia Mukt Bharat” (Anaemia Free India). He highlighted the project’s alignment with Mission Utkarsh, aiming to bring these aspirational districts up to the national average on key performance indicators.

Ayush: A Cost-Effective Solution:

Smt. Smriti Irani emphasized the potential of Ayush systems, backed by evidence-based research, to offer a cost-effective solution for tackling anaemia. She highlighted the project’s global significance due to its large-scale implementation, time-bound outcomes, and potential for contributing to global health knowledge.

Addressing Malnutrition:

Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary of the Ministry of Ayush, highlighted the detrimental effects of anaemia on adolescent girls’ physical and mental well-being and future motherhood. He emphasized the role of traditional medicine systems in primary healthcare settings.

Synergy with Existing Programs:

Shri Indewar Pandey, Secretary of the Ministry of Women and Child Development, highlighted their existing efforts to address malnutrition in children, adolescent girls, and pregnant women through programs like “Saksham Anganwadi” and “Poshan.” He emphasized the importance of focusing on girls in this age group to ensure future generations of healthy mothers and children. He also mentioned their successful collaboration with Ayush on over 2.7 crore Ayush-based activities during “Poshan Maah” and “Poshan Pakhwada.”

Leveraging Expertise:

The Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) brings valuable experience to this initiative. They have a proven track record in conducting clinical trials and implementing successful public health programs related to anaemia control and antenatal care using Ayurvedic interventions.

Prominent Attendees:

The event was also attended by Prof. Ravi Narayan Acharya, Director General of CCRAS, Pushpa Chaudhary (Team Lead, Reproductive, Maternal, Child and Adolescent health, WHO), Dr. Rajeev Bahl (DG, ICMR), and other dignitaries.

This joint initiative by the Ministry of Ayush and the Ministry of Women and Child Development represents a significant step forward in addressing the challenge of anaemia in adolescent girls and promoting their overall health and well-being.

Seeman Chief Coordinator Naam Tamilar Katchi in Twitter:

The decision of the Tamil Nadu government to acquire land for a new airport in Parandur is highly condemnable. The forceful eviction of farmers and residents from their land is a violation of their fundamental rights.

The people of Parandur have been peacefully protesting against the land acquisition for over a year and a half. They have been expressing their concerns about the loss of their fertile land, water bodies, and homes. However, the DMK government has shown no regard for their concerns and has instead resorted to repressive measures.

The arrest of protesters, including women, elders, and farmers, is a gross violation of human rights. It is an attempt to silence dissent and suppress the legitimate concerns of the people.

The DMK, which had promised to protect the rights of farmers and marginalized communities, has now turned its back on them. This is a betrayal of the trust that the people had placed in the party.

The people of Parandur are determined to continue their fight for their land and their rights. They will not be cowed down by the government’s repressive measures.

We, the Naam Tamilar Katchi, strongly condemn the arrest of Parandur protesters and demand their immediate release. We also urge the Tamil Nadu government to immediately withdraw its plans to acquire land for the new airport.

In a democratic country, people have the right to protest peacefully against government policies. The DMK government should respect this right and engage in dialogue with the people of Parandur to find a solution that is acceptable to all stakeholders.

The people of Parandur have shown great courage and determination in their fight against land acquisition. Their struggle is an inspiration to all those who are fighting for their rights and against injustice.

We stand in solidarity with the people of Parandur and pledge our support to their struggle.

]]>
In a significant step towards enhancing voter participation, the Election Commission of India (ECI) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) and the Department of Posts (DoP). This collaboration aims to leverage the extensive networks of these organizations to amplify voter outreach and awareness efforts ahead of the upcoming General Elections to Lok Sabha 2024.

Building on ECI’s Continuous Efforts:

This initiative builds upon ECI’s ongoing efforts to strengthen electoral literacy across the country. Recently, a similar MoU was signed with the Ministry of Education to integrate electoral literacy into school and college curriculums.

Key Provisions of the MoU:

  • Widespread Reach: Banks and postal organizations, along with their affiliated institutions, will disseminate voter education messages through various channels, including:
    • Websites
    • Social media platforms
    • Customer outreach programs
    • Posters and flex boards at prominent locations
  • Engaging Stakeholders:
    • Voter Awareness Fora will be established to foster discussions and initiatives related to voter education, engaging both employees and customers.
    • Employees of IBA and DoP will be sensitized about the SVEEP (Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation) training module.
  • DoP’s Special Initiative: The Department of Posts will issue special cancellation stamps featuring voter education messages on postal articles.

Addressing Low Voter Turnout:

Despite successfully conducting fair and peaceful elections, the ECI acknowledges the challenge of low voter turnout. In the 2019 General Elections, approximately 30 crore eligible voters did not cast their votes, resulting in a 67.4% voter turnout. This collaboration aims to bridge this gap by empowering citizens with the knowledge and awareness necessary to exercise their electoral rights.

Strengthening Democracy through Collaboration:

This MoU signifies a significant step towards strengthening Indian democracy by:

  • Empowering citizens with knowledge about their electoral rights and responsibilities.
  • Fostering a culture of informed and active participation in the electoral process.

Background Information:

The Indian Banks’ Association has a vast network of over 247 member banks and 1.63 lakh+ branches across the country. The Department of Posts boasts the world’s most extensive postal network, with over 1,55,000 post offices. This collaboration effectively leverages these widespread networks to reach every corner of the nation and ensure every citizen has access to essential voter information.
